Managers use artificial intelligence twice as often as ordinary employees — study

A new study by The Gallup Organization indicates the growing popularity of artificial intelligence, especially among office workers, where 50% of respondents use it. However, managers tend to use AI services much more often than their employees.
The survey found that 33% of managers, or those who identified themselves as «managers of managers,» use artificial intelligence frequently, meaning several times a week or more, compared to 16% of employees, Business Insider reported.
Gallup’s chief research officer for workplace management and well-being, Jim Garter, believes that leaders are likely feeling additional pressure to use AI because it can improve efficiency and effectiveness.
«More executives are probably experimenting with it because they see the urgency and see it as a potential threat to competitiveness,» Garter said.
This indicator was one of several findings from a Gallup survey on the adoption of AI in the workplace, including:
The number of American workers who use AI at work at least a few times a year has increased from 21% to 40% in the past two years.
Frequent use of AI has increased from 11% to 19% since 2023.
Daily AI usage has doubled from 4% to 8% in the last year.
15% of employees surveyed said it was «very or somewhat likely that automation, robots, or AI» would lead to the loss of their jobs within five years.
44% of employees said their company had started implementing AI, but only 22% said their company had shared a plan or strategy.
30% of employees said their company has «general guidelines or a formal policy» on using AI at work
16% of employees who use AI «strongly agree» that the AI tools provided by their company are useful for their work
The Gallup report noted that the use of AI «has increased primarily for jobs involving mental labor,» with 27% of those surveyed now saying they frequently use AI at work, up 12% from last year.
Among office workers, AI is most commonly used in technology (50%), followed by professional services (34%) and finance (32%). However, according to Gallup, AI usage among manufacturing workers has fallen from 11% in 2023 to 9% this year.
Concerns that AI will lead to job losses have also not increased in the past two years, but the report found that workers in industries such as technology, retail and finance are more likely than others to believe that AI will one day replace them in their jobs.
According to those surveyed, the most common problem with AI implementation is «ambiguity of use cases or value proposition,» suggesting that companies may not be providing clear guidance.
The report found that when employees «strongly agree» that management has shared a clear plan for using AI, they are three times more likely to feel «very prepared to work with AI» and 2.6 times more likely to feel comfortable using it at work.
Earlier, research results published in the Journal of Applied Psychology showed that frequent use of AI at work can have harmful mental and physical consequences for employees.
Researchers found that people who used AI regularly suffered from loneliness, insomnia, and more frequent alcohol use compared to other study participants who did not. Although the workers were physically present at the workplace, their loneliness was a direct result of frequent interaction with AI, which eliminated the need for human contact.
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
