Prediction market giant Polymarket said that hackers stole users' funds after a third-party service was hacked.
Polymarket said on Thursday that a breach of a third-party vendor allowed hackers to integrate malicious code into its website “for some users.” The company said it had “localized” the incident, was contacting those affected and “fully compensating them,” Reuters reported .
Polymarket spokesman Connor Brandy confirmed that the hack resulted in the theft of user funds, but declined to provide further details and did not answer specific questions about the incident.
Almost simultaneously with Polymarket's official statement, blockchain monitoring company PeckShield reported a phishing attack on the platform's users. According to their estimates, hackers managed to steal almost $3 million worth of cryptocurrencies.
Another blockchain analyst confirmed a similar scale of losses and noted that more than 11 people were affected by the attackers.
In the past few days, two people have claimed on social media that they had funds stolen from Polymarket.
The breach is another blow to a company that has already made headlines for negative reasons this week. On Sunday, an investigation revealed that Polymarket paid online bloggers to post misleading videos of them winning large sums on bets that were actually fake. In response, the company said it would audit its advertising content.
