Discord users undergo age verification if the platform suspects they may be underage, or if they live in a location that requires ID verification to access the platform. In such cases, users are asked to send a selfie with a government-issued ID and their Discord username to the platform’s Trust & Safety team, TechCrunch notes.
Discord said it has contacted affected users, whose stolen data may also include their IP addresses, which could reveal the user’s general region of residence.
The hackers claim to have stolen 1.5 terabytes of data, which could cover well over 70,000 accounts. A Discord spokesperson says the claims are «incorrect and part of a ransom demand attempt».
The leak of Discord user data has fueled concerns among digital rights activists about the use of age verification, which is already in place in half of the states in the US and has recently been rolled out in the UK.
Experts are concerned that these laws require users to upload sensitive information, such as government IDs, which could be stolen by hackers.
It was previously reported that cybercriminals are massively abusing the custom link mechanism in Discord, redirecting users to fake servers with info stealers that steal data to access crypto wallets and browsers.
