This was announced by the company's CEO Elon Musk in a post on the X network (Twitter). According to TechCrunch , the decision to abandon the Cybertruck was made after several years of unsatisfactory sales figures.
Musk predicted annual deliveries of 250,000 units by the end of 2023, and the gigafactory in Texas was initially positioned as a “Cybertruck factory.” However, over the past three years, the automaker has managed to sell only a few tens of thousands of these pickup trucks.
“My personal favorite is probably the pickup truck, and we’re just going to build an amazing pickup truck,” Musk shared during the company’s financial report back in 2019. However, the production product faced serious problems: the price increased from the promised $40,000 to $60,000 for the base version, and the range was reduced by more than 100 miles from the declared one. Musk’s political activities in recent years, as well as the specific design , which was perceived only by a narrow audience, did not contribute to sales.
This is not the first victim of the company's new priorities. Previously, Tesla stopped production of classic models - the Model S sedan and the Model X crossover. The freed up space was used for assembly lines for humanoid robots Optimus.
In October, Tesla held an event in Waco, Texas, where it officially unveiled its new electric supercar , the Roadster, capable of short-haul flights using rocket engines and accelerating to 60 mph in less than a second.
