A PC owner said his cat prevented a fire that could have been caused by a melting connector on an NVIDIA RTX 4090 graphics card.
According to a Taiwanese gamer, he had just stepped away from his computer when he suddenly heard his cat meowing extremely loudly from another room. When he returned, he found smoke coming from his PC, as well as a strong burning smell from a melted graphics card power connector.
The guy quickly unplugged the computer to prevent further damage. He later discovered that the PC no longer shuts down normally, so it’s likely his pet helped prevent a serious fire.
«While I was sitting on the toilet, I suddenly heard a cat screaming continuously, and when I opened the door, I saw smoke and smelled burning plastic,» the gamer said.
The problem with the power connectors of high-end NVIDIA graphics cards is not new and has been going on for several years. Previous research has indicated that improperly connecting the 12VHPWR cable or uneven voltage distribution between the pins can lead to dangerous heat buildup. Despite design changes and new connector standards aimed at solving the problem, cases are still reported from time to time.
The owner of an NVIDIA RTX 4090 rescued by a cat claims that his cable was properly connected and checked regularly, even though his configuration did not use an adapter. This has sparked a debate among gamers about how many cases of melting graphics card connectors are the fault of the users themselves.
