Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has announced a major shakeup in the company's top AI leadership, with founders and key engineers changing roles or starting their own projects.
Demis Gassabis is stepping down as chief operating officer of Google DeepMind (GDM), the company announced in a blog post. He will take on new roles as chairman of GDM and chief scientist of Alphabet. In this role, he will focus on strategic issues of artificial general intelligence (AGI), scientific research and the development of medical startup Isomorphic Labs.
Koray Kavukcuoglu (Chief AI Architect) has been appointed Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind. He will take on the day-to-day management of the unit, Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and Gemini App and developer tools.
Jeff Dean, who spent 27 years at Google, is leaving the company along with legendary engineer Sanjay Ghemawat. They have founded an independent, non-profit corporation to accelerate discovery in machine learning, science, and engineering. Alphabet will serve as a founding investor and cloud partner.
When announcing the changes, the management also shared the current achievements of the direction:
Gemini App: audience exceeded 950 million monthly active users.
Gemma models: total number of open model downloads has crossed the 900 million mark.
Development of new generations: Gassabis confirmed active progress in creating the next flagship models, including Gemini 4.
