Swedish Kreuger interceptor drones will start hunting "shaheeds" in Ukraine in winter
Dominik Surano, the top manager of the Swedish startup Nordic Air Defence, which produces miniature Kreuger 100 interceptor drones, spoke about his intention to transfer them to the Defense Forces to collect feedback.
Dominik Surano, the top manager of the Swedish startup Nordic Air Defence, which produces miniature Kreuger 100 interceptor drones, spoke about his intention to transfer them to the Defense Forces to collect feedback.
«According to our plan, this winter our Kreuger 100 interceptor will undergo flight tests — and we will send it to Ukraine to hunt for the Shaheds. Then — we will collect feedback from the Ukrainian military, which today has the greatest experience in drone warfare in the world. It is important for me to hear what works, what doesn’t, what can be improved,» Surano said in an interview with Defender Media.
The Kreuger 100 is a lightweight, dual-purpose (civilian/military) drone interceptor platform that prioritizes cost-effectiveness and operational scalability. Designed to replace traditional interceptors that rely heavily on expensive onboard sensors, cameras, and propulsion systems, the Kreuger 100 instead uses a pulsed propulsion system and software-based flight controls to track and intercept targets.
Surano previously worked at Palmer Luckey’s miltech company Anduril, where he led the development of the Anvil quadcopter interceptor. He said that he worked in Ukraine many times while working for the company. Dominic Surano noted that in 2022 he moved from Anvil to the Ghost reconnaissance UAV project, and participated in the deployment of 40 such systems in the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to him, he solved problems in conditions of GNSS jamming, integrated Ghost telemetry and video with other systems.
«At the beginning of the war, the Ukrainians were flying Starlink, and I was sitting in my apartment in northern Sweden and watching them inflict losses on the enemy right in my living room. Everyone says 'the future has already arrived,' but it really felt that way back then,» Surano said.
He added that the company then implemented computer vision-based navigation for Ghost and added support for Xbox gamepads for manual piloting.
Dominic Surano also reported that Nordic Air Defense conducts weekly flight tests of the Kreuger 100. To save money, the company uses ready-made foam airplanes equipped with electronics from an interceptor drone.
