The company says some users are using Claude Code «continuously in the background, 24/7.» Anthropic says the restrictions are also intended to stop a small group of users who violate Claude’s usage policies by sharing accounts and reselling access to Claude Code.
The new restrictions will take effect on August 28 for subscribers of the $20 per month plan, as well as the $100 and $200 per month Max plans, TechCrunch reports .
Anthropic added that existing usage limits, which are updated every five hours, will also remain in place. The company is also introducing two new limits, which are updated every seven days; one is a general usage limit and the other is specific to Anthropic’s most advanced AI model, Claude Opus 4. Anthropic says that Max subscribers can purchase additional usage beyond the limits at standard API rates.
Anthropic has previously imposed price caps on Claude Code without further explanation. While Anthropic’s AI programming tool has gained popularity among IT professionals, the company is reportedly having trouble scaling it. Anthropic’s status page shows that Claude Code has experienced partial or major outages at least seven times in the past month — possibly because some users appear to be using Claude Code nonstop.
«Claude Code has seen unprecedented demand since launch,» said Anthropic spokesperson Amy Rotherham. «Most users won’t notice a difference,» she said, and the restrictions will only affect 5% of subscribers based on their current usage patterns.
The company says that most Pro users can expect to get 40-80 hours of Sonnet 4 through Claude Code within their weekly limits. $100 Max subscribers can expect 140-280 hours of Sonnet 4 and 15-35 hours of Opus 4. And $200 Max subscribers can expect 240-480 hours of Sonnet 4 and 24-40 hours of Opus 4.
The company notes that usage may vary depending on the size of the code base and other factors.
Recall that at the end of June, Anthropic added a new feature to its chatbot Claude, which allows you to create applications with artificial intelligence right inside it.
