Tech billionaire Elon Musk has pledged $1 million to create nationwide murals in the United States in honor of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, who was murdered in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Recall that Zarutska was killed right on public transport by 34-year-old black American DeCarlos Brown Jr., who had a long criminal history and was homeless. At the same time, the attacker, who stabbed the girl with a pocket knife, apparently had no obvious reasons for this crime, which calls into question his mental health. The subsequent video of the attacker’s behavior, which appeared on the Internet, also testifies to his mental health. Fortunately, he was detained by law enforcement officers.
According to Yahoo, this murder sparked serious discussions about public safety and criminal justice reform, and the tragedy deeply shook the Ukrainian community in America.
Following this tragic event, Intercom CEO Egon McCabe announced that he would create a $500,000 fund to create murals depicting Zarutska in major cities across the United States.
McCabe wrote on the social network X that he would allocate $500,000 in grants of $10,000 to paint murals depicting Iryna Zarutskaya for American artists.
His post went viral, and Elon Musk responded by promising to allocate an additional $1 million to this initiative.
In turn, US President Donald Trump said he was demanding the death penalty for the attacker.
According to local media, 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska was an artist who immigrated to the United States with her immediate family during the full-scale invasion. In the States, she was taking English courses at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and was working as a cook in a restaurant at the time of her death.
