The Meta smart glasses have a small LED indicator next to the camera. It lights up when the wearer is taking a photo or recording a video, and is intended to warn people around them that they may be being filmed.
Meta has already protected the glasses from the most obvious way to hide the recording. If you cover the LED indicator before starting the recording, the camera will not work. However, there was a loophole. First, you could start recording, and only then cover the light. The camera would continue to record. With the new update, this will no longer work. If you cover the indicator while recording, the camera will turn off.
«We will continue to release updates to ensure that the recording indicator reliably alerts people nearby when someone is taking a photo or video,» Gimel said, adding that only a «very small percentage» of users are attempting to bypass the protection.
The issue of covert filming has become particularly acute for Meta as smart glasses have become increasingly popular. Videos have surfaced online of users recording strangers without their consent or playing pranks on passersby. Additional privacy concerns have also been raised after reports that Meta is working on facial recognition for its glasses.
