Meta plans to invest $60 billion in AI development by 2025 amid concerns about Chinese startup DeepSeek
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said his company will build a data center in Louisiana the size of Manhattan Island. He said 2025 will be a «definitive year for AI,» and that Meta will spend an additional $60 billion to $65 billion on its development.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said his company will build a data center in Louisiana the size of Manhattan Island. He said 2025 will be a «definitive year for AI,» and that Meta will spend an additional $60 billion to $65 billion on its development.
Zuckerberg made the announcement on his social media platform Threads. He also talked about the company’s plans for its 2GW data center in Louisiana, which will be «so big it will cover a large part of Manhattan», Business Insider reports.
According to Mark Zuckerberg, Meta AI will become the «leading assistant» serving over 1 billion users.
«In year 25, we will bring online about 1 GW of computing power, and by the end of the year we will have over 1.3 million GPUs. We plan to invest $60-65 billion in capital expenditures this year, as well as significantly expand our AI teams, and we have the capital to continue investing in the years ahead,» he said.
Meta shares fell after Zuckerberg’s statement, but quickly recovered. In its third-quarter report, Meta said it expects «significant growth in capital spending in 2025», — as Zuckerberg explained that he is happy to continue spending heavily on AI.
He said at the time that AI «has a positive impact on almost every aspect of our work,» noting that he sees «many new opportunities to use new advances in AI to accelerate our core business.»
Mark Zuckerberg’s statements came amid concerns among Western AI companies about Chinese startup DeepSeek, which has developed an open-source artificial intelligence model that outperforms Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic models in third-party tests and has a cheaper subscription for users.
DeepSeek, which recently demonstrated a large language model DeepSeek V3, has already introduced a new version of its AI — DeepSeek-R1. The developers claim that it is not inferior to OpenAI’s «thoughtful» o1 model in terms of performance and surpasses it in terms of affordability. The development from the Chinese startup DeepSeek has also surpassed its main competitor ChatGPT in the US App Store.
AI and China were a major topic of discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, this week.
«We have to take Chinese developments very seriously,» Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, which is OpenAI’s largest investor, said at the Davos economic forum.
As a reminder, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously donated $1 million to the inaugural fund and then attended the event itself, where Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States. However, it seems Meta forgot to tell the Meta AI chatbot about this, which still believes that Joe Biden is running the country.

Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
