Microsoft has decided to finally leave the Russian market: its subsidiary, Microsoft Rus LLC, is preparing to file for its own bankruptcy with the Moscow Arbitration Court.
The corresponding message was published on the Fedresurs portal. Gazprombank is the company's creditor, The Moscow Times reports .
The reason for the appeal to the court was precisely the lawsuit filed by Gazprombank in January 2025. The bank wanted to recover 90.9 million rubles from the Russian legal entity Microsoft as part of a case of unjust enrichment. As indicated in the case materials, the claims relate to a technical support contract concluded in September 2021 and valid until September 12, 2022. According to the plaintiff, since April 2022, Microsoft Rus has ceased to fulfill its obligations under the contract, despite having received payment in full.
In April, the court partially satisfied the lawsuit: the company was ordered to recover $887,000 in unjust enrichment and another $62,000 in interest — a total of $949,000. It was also ordered to accrue additional interest until the debt is fully repaid.
Microsoft officially began winding down its Russian business in the spring of 2022 after Russia's attack on Ukraine. However, until recently, the company maintained a legal presence in the country. In December 2024 - January 2025, Microsoft branches in 13 Russian cities were finally closed, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Vladivostok and Krasnodar. However, the corporate report published on March 7, 2025, did not mention the liquidation of the legal entity.
Microsoft Rus LLC sharply reduced its operating activity after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. While revenue in 2021 was 6.9 billion rubles, in 2024 this figure fell to 161.6 million rubles. At the same time, according to the company's accounting reports, it still showed a net profit of 174.1 million rubles.
