Microsoft has returned Skype for Business Server in a new version: Teams does not solve the problems of local clients
Although Microsoft has long promoted Teams as a universal communication solution, the company is forced to maintain a separate product line for those who cannot switch to Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure.
Although Microsoft has long promoted Teams as a universal communication solution, the company is forced to maintain a separate product line for those who cannot switch to Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure.
Microsoft has released Skype for Business Server Subscription Edition (SE) — a new subscription version of the corporate messenger that allows you to leave the server infrastructure on-premises. According to Neowin, the solution came about because Microsoft Teams still does not support on-premise deployment, which makes it unsuitable for a number of companies and government agencies with regulatory or security restrictions.
Regular Skype was a cloud service for private communication, but it was closed long ago. Instead, Skype for Business Server is an on-premises system that companies install on their own servers for internal communication. And although its versions 2015 and 2019 will officially lose support on October 14, 2025, the new SE edition will allow such infrastructures to remain alive on a subscription basis.
SE operates under the Modern Lifecycle Policy: it will be supported as long as companies update their configurations. At the same time, the product will not receive major functional updates. It can be installed as an in-place upgrade to existing installations of Skype for Business Server 2015 or 2019.
Visually and functionally, SE is almost identical to the 2019 version: same API, same requirements, just a new agreement and version number. But starting in late 2025, it will be the only supported version of Skype for Business Server, and previous versions will no longer be able to be installed or maintained.
Microsoft Teams has indeed completely replaced Skype in the cloud, but the company still doesn’t offer an on-premises alternative for large customers. That’s why Skype for Business Server, despite all the claims of the brand’s «death», remains vital for a segment that isn’t ready for a full cloud transformation.
It’s worth recalling that we recently reported on how one of Windows' most iconic symbols, the «blue screen of death,» will soon be gone. Microsoft is updating the crash notification mechanism in Windows 11: instead of the blue background with a sad smiley face, users will see a black screen with minimalistic text.
