Microsoft Teams will start spying on employees in the office - here's how

Microsoft is rolling out new productivity features to Teams, Microsoft 365, and Copilot. However, one update has users worried that their management will start tracking where they are at work.

According to a recent development roadmap published by Microsoft, Teams will soon determine users' location based on their Wi-Fi connections, giving employers the ability to track employees as soon as they connect to the network, writes BGR.

While this update aims to improve team synergy and productivity, critics warn that the feature will turn into a corporate surveillance tool, jeopardizing user autonomy and privacy.

Despite the announcement that the update will begin in December 2025, exact technical details are unknown. So far, Microsoft has only clarified that employees' locations will be updated automatically when they "connect to corporate Wi-Fi.

Some observers predict that this feature will likely be based on employees' IP addresses. In that case, the Teams update would make it nearly impossible for users to fake their location, as they would need to physically connect to the office Wi-Fi network to show they are at work.

According to Microsoft, the new feature will be integrated into Windows and Mac platforms. However, the update will not change the default settings for corporate Teams users, as company administrators will have to enable the feature. In addition, end users will be required to consent to use the service.
