According to The Register, Benchmarks have been added to the Copilot Dashboard: managers can compare teams by manager type, region and function, percentage of «active users,» which apps are running AI (Teams, Copilot Chat for Work, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Loop), and how engagement changes over time. There’s also external comparison: Viva shows you whether you’re lagging behind the average at other companies. Microsoft emphasizes that these benchmarks are based on aggregated, mixed data sets, so no one person’s specific data can be identified.
An «active Copilot user» is someone who has actually taken an action with an AI feature, not just has a license. Currently, the reports don’t distinguish between personal and corporate subscriptions. Microsoft says the goal here is to see the big picture and find ways to increase useful usage. This is convenient for businesses: licenses are expensive, and now it’s easy to spot departments where Copilot hasn’t taken hold. Perhaps this was due to a lack of training or inappropriate scenarios.
Critics say that «ratings» can turn usage into a metrics game and encourage teams to «click for the check mark.» A separate risk area is allowing employees to «bring» their own Copilot subscriptions to the work network (Microsoft recently supported this), which could create a «shadow IT» infrastructure. In response, the company emphasizes the privacy of aggregated comparisons and promises a gradual rollout.
For now, Copilot Benchmarks is available in private preview for select customers. Microsoft promises a wider launch in October — along with an updated dashboard, where managers will see simple, «human» numbers: who is actually working with AI, who just has access, and where Copilot is having a tangible impact.
Viva Insights has long collected performance signals (like meeting times or focus), but now the key question is not «how many hours» but «is AI beneficial?» The new metrics take the discussion about Copilot’s payback from presentations to convenient dashboards and inevitably raise the conversation about the limits of employee surveillance and honest ways to measure performance.
