«Please do not use Google’s AI to find out about our specials. Go to our Facebook page or our website. Google’s AI is not accurate and is telling people about specials that don’t exist, which is causing anger from customers who are yelling at our employees», — Stefanina’s Wentzville said in a Facebook post.
The company added that it cannot control what «Google publishes or says» and will not follow special offers that AI has come up with.
This situation demonstrates that the AI behind chatbots and other large language models is still extremely prone to «hallucinations,» that is, the creation of believable misinformation. Google’s AI reviews have been frequently mocked since their introduction last year, including for recommending that you put glue on pizza.
Eva Gannon, whose family owns the restaurant, said Google’s AI was constantly telling customers about fake deals and even making up entire menu items. In one example, Google’s AI claimed that Stefanina’s was offering a large pizza for the price of a small.
«It works against us. As a small business, we can’t do Google’s AI specials,» Gannon said.
