The US Department of Commerce office has informed its employees that the Chinese artificial intelligence model DeepSeek is banned from their government devices.
This was reported by Reuters, which reviewed the ministry's statement and confirmed this fact by several sources.
“To ensure the security of the Department of Commerce’s information systems, access to the new Chinese artificial intelligence DeepSeek is completely prohibited for all employees,” the emails said. “Do not download, view, or access any applications, desktop programs, or websites related to DeepSeek.”
US representatives and members of Congress have expressed concerns about DeepSeek's threat to data privacy and sensitive government information.
Additionally, numerous states have banned the model on government devices, including Virginia, Texas, and New York, and a coalition of 21 state attorneys general has urged Congress to pass legislation. Republicans and Democrats have written a bill to that effect.
In January, the US Congress banned its employees from using the Chinese chatbot DeepSeek. In February, South Korean authorities banned new downloads of the DeepSeek app in the country. The Chinese AI has also been restricted in Australia, Italy , Taiwan and the Netherlands.
