The release was announced by the Anthropic team. According to the developers, the new modifications can rewrite prompts before sending them to the model, block or repeat tool calls, remove sensitive information from the source data, and create custom panels and buttons in the workspace.
Mods are installed as plugins using the /plugin command. They are supported in both the CLI and the Claude Desktop. With this update, Anthropic has moved some of its own functionality to the new architecture: for example, the standard /diff command is now shipped as a separate mod that users can disable or replace with a third-party equivalent.
Claude Code creator Boris Chernyi emphasized the importance of this feature for personalizing your workflow. “Now you can customize Claude to work and look exactly the way you want, just by typing in the appropriate command. Everyone works in their own way, so there’s no reason why everyone’s experience with Claude should be the same,” he noted on Twitter.

Write one with a few lines of TypeScript, or have Claude build it for you. Mods ship inside plugins, so you install them with /plugin in the CLI or desktop app.

At the same time, the company warns about cybersecurity issues, as mods are loaded without isolation in a "sandbox" and have the same level of access to the user’s system as Claude Code itself. Developers are advised to install plugins only from trusted sources. To reduce risks in a corporate environment, a special sec-default mod will be loaded by default for subscribers of the Team and Enterprise plans, designed to block high-risk actions.
