An engineer has adapted the MouthPad gadget for video games, which allows paralyzed people to control the cursor
Embodied AI Engineer Robert Dale Smith demonstrated the MouthPad device, which allows you to control digital devices using head and tongue movements, in the video game Rocket League.
Embodied AI Engineer Robert Dale Smith demonstrated the MouthPad device, which allows you to control digital devices using head and tongue movements, in the video game Rocket League.
«I converted my MouthPad^ from BLE to USB. I adjusted the camera movement in Rocket League to match my head movements,» the developer said.
Robert Dale Smith has worked on wearable robotics and embodied AI, and has created a BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) to USB adapter for Augmental, the company that created the MouthPad^.
It is an intraoral interface that allows you to control digital devices such as computers, tablets and smartphones hands-free using tongue and head movements. It provides seamless connectivity via Bluetooth and, like a wireless mouse, is compatible with all common operating systems.
MouthPad^ is custom-made based on the customer’s dental impressions, which are sent at the time of ordering. It is designed to improve accessibility for users with disabilities and provide intuitive control.

Smith’s BLE-to-USB HID adapter solves practical connectivity issues for MouthPad^ users on Windows and macOS. According to the developer, to get the device working in Rocket League, he had to modify an Xbox controller to have a USB port through which the adapter could send button presses.
Robert Dale Smith is currently working on JoypadOS, a software for next-generation game controllers. These are intelligent devices that understand the user’s intentions, not just input signals. The goal of the project is to create an artificial intelligence controller with a built-in display, connectivity, and smart features.
