In Ukraine, at the EdTech event, the Ministry of Digital and the Ministry of Education and Science presented the free educational digital ecosystem «Mriya», which was expanded to the entire country after the completion of beta testing. What is known about the system, who has already connected to the «Mriya» network, and what ambitious plans have been set for the number of connections and the development of additional functionality that they plan to add to the system.

What is «Mriya» now?

President Volodymyr Zelensky presented the pilot project of the innovative educational application «Mriya» for Ukrainian schoolchildren, their parents, and teachers on September 1 last year. Since then, until recently, the system has been in a large-scale beta test.

The structure of «Mriya» already includes such elements as:

  • Mriya ID is like «Diya» only for children.
  • Daily (weekly, monthly) plan — where you can plan your studies.
  • Journals — used by teachers, which also contain grade point averages and other indicators necessary for organizing the educational process.
  • Schedule builder — which allows teachers to plan the entire school year, simplifies work with a large number of classes and children.
  • Chats — which help you stay connected with fellow educators and students in a safe space. Mriya has integrated the open source Signal, which Mykhailo Fedorov called the most secure messenger, all data in which is encrypted.
  • «Pencil grades» is a tool that teachers are already used to when they assign a certain grade, but students can still refine and change it.
  • Homework — teachers can send assignments for completion, and students can complete them and mark them in the completion program.
  • Content library — there are already over 5,000 different forms of content (video and audio) both useful for the educational process and entertaining.
  • Curriculums .

Today , 40 Ukrainian schools from 6 regions are already operating in the Mriya system:

  • Odesa region,
  • Mykolaiv region,
  • Dnipro region,
  • Zaporizhzhia region,
  • Kyiv region,
  • Ivano-Frankivsk.

Zaporizhia region became the first region to fully join Mriya with all schools.

«This year, „Mriya“ will become national,» said Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the «Mriya Postosvita» event.

In addition, as the head of the Ministry of Digital Affairs, Mykhailo Fedorov, said, «Mriya» is also working on «killing bureaucracy.» In particular, the system managed to produce some of the reports that educators had to submit to certain state bodies. They are now formed based on data from the magazine and other parts of «Mriya.»

The «Mriya» project was made possible thanks to the help of donors, including: UNICEF, the Eastern Europe Foundation, EGAP, and the Swiss Confederation.

About development and technical nuances

As project co-leader Oleksandr Pavlenko told dev.ua, the Mriya system consists of a mobile application (these are native applications for Android and iOS), a web portal, and a backend, which is generally universal.

In total, the technical team consisted of about 40 specialists. The mobile application was worked on by so-called classic development teams, including mobile, Android and iOS developers, testers, team leads and tech leads, led by project managers.

The most up-to-date asynchronous technologies were used for the backend, in particular, Node.js. First of all, as Oleksandr Pavlenko explains, this was due to the high load on the system during peak periods from a large number of users. For example, he explains, when at the end of the semester thousands of teachers log into the program to give students grades.

Currently, there are 7 vacancies open at Mriya, in particular, technical specialties:

Oleksandr Pavlenko also added that in addition to the technical team, the project also has vacancies in the communications department and the implementation team, because Mriya plans to build a presence in almost every region of Ukraine.

Answering questions about possible cyberattacks, including from hostile hackers on state structures, the project co-leader said that Mriya has not yet encountered any cyberattacks. «I hope this will not happen,» he added, noting that the system is generally ready for this.

«If all teachers in our schools start giving grades at the same time, it will be compatible with a very serious DDoS attack, and in terms of load, we will definitely withstand it,» said Oleksandr Pavlenko.

In addition to the fact that the system is ISO 27001K certified in terms of cybersecurity, according to him, there are no logins and passwords in Mriya, and it is impossible to gain access to the system through social engineering, for example.

What will be added to «Mriya»

This year, according to Mikhail Fedorov, Mriya plans to launch a major update in the near future. The improvements will affect both existing tools, in particular, the content library or reporting for teachers, and the addition of new features. In particular, the following will be implemented:

  • Bonus system — when a student receives points for not missing classes or getting good grades, and for them, they can receive, for example, movie tickets or the opportunity to buy various educational content. For this, the system will introduce so-called «Strikes», which will help form the habit of maintaining or constantly improving results by systematically uploading completed homework or attending classes without missing classes.
  • Extracurricular learning — the team is currently working on creating inter-class groups for extracurricular learning. Here you will have the opportunity to find a club or section, or other additional activities.

The data used by Mriya is obtained from the modernized version of the central database of the Ministry of Education and Science iCom 2.0. The data is not stored in the Mriya database, but is located in state registries and locally on user devices. All servers, data processing centers (DPCs), are located in Ukraine.

«Unfortunately or fortunately, I don’t know, we are a state product, and we can’t do it any other way,» explains the project co-leader.

How to join «Mriya»

To join «Mriya», as the co-leader of the «Mriya» project, Oleksandr Pavlenko, said, you can:

  • by leaving an application on the Mriya website from the school, which will be processed by the ecosystem team,
  • The entire community can also get involved, which involves organizing a meeting of all schools in the community or region to hear and work through all existing issues, and then all schools in the region can be connected.

After submitting the application, the Mriya team contacts the school principal, checks the information in the iCom registry, and after the school council and the corresponding vote, connection, authorization, and activation occur.

Next, the education system used by the school is changed to «Mriya» and the staff training process begins. First, administrators undergo it, and in the second stage, teachers are trained. After that, users are connected. Children are connected either with the help of parents through authorization in «Diya» or Bank ID, or with the help of class teachers.

Even after connection, the school continues to be supported by a support specialist to resolve difficulties or additional questions, as well as to receive feedback on the use of the system.

According to Oleksandr Pavlenko, Mriya is considered integrated into a school when at least 50% of teachers use the system. «Usually, full integration occurs 2 months after connection,» he added, noting that as of April 8, more than 180 Ukrainian schools are already operating in the Mriya system.

AI in «Mriya»

Artificial intelligence, which will soon be launched in Mriya, is planned to be used for several things:

  • Recommend content worth watching based on grades, homework, and preferences. The recommendation system takes into account not only the child’s preferences based on what they like, but also academic grades. In addition, as noted by the head of the Mriya project, Maksym Ilyukhin, AI can recommend not only educational modules, but also content for extracurricular education, hobbies, or preferences.
  • Generate tests based on educational content. The head of the Mriya project added that tests can be generated individually for a child, as well as to assess independent work or to summarize a specific educational block.

«This is the most ethical use of AI — for the educational process of our children. So that every Alexander can find his own Aristotle,» said Mikhail Fedorov, emphasizing the usefulness of AI recommendations.

Regarding plans

To date, there have been about 1,000 applications from schools across the country to connect to Mriya. According to the President of Ukraine, several thousand more schools are planned to be connected to the system by 2025.

«Everything will depend on how we onboard teachers, we are trying to make it very convenient,» explained Mikhail Fedorov. The head of the Ministry of Digital Affairs also added that at least 2,000 schools are planned to be connected to the system and 150 schools are currently in the process of being connected.
