Russia has finally banned internet calls to landlines and mobile phones. The reasoning, as always, is "impressive"

The Russian government, by its resolution of December 26, 2024, published today, «optimized the list of licenses for the provision of communication services to limit telephone fraud», excluding from this list the license for «transmission of Internet data with the overlay of voice information».
In fact, behind these rather vague phrases is a direct ban on so-called IP telephony.
«Most often, such technologies were used by fraudsters, as it allowed them to replace numbers. Now this type of telephone fraud will be seriously limited, as it will be impossible to connect data networks to telephone networks,» the government of the aggressor country explained.
At the same time, they assured that the decision would not affect ordinary telephone users in any way.
«People who use voice communication in messengers use special programs that provide communication via the Internet, without access to the fixed and mobile telephone network,» the Russian government said in a statement.
But whether this will actually lead to a ban on the use of numerous Internet messengers for calls is not yet fully clear, although the Russian government has so far denied this.
