"Get Internet by the bucketful." Or why Russia is risking much more by raising the stakes through strikes on telecoms

“Get internet in buckets,” jokes Mykola Andrushchenko, marketing director of the Lanet network, on his Facebook page.

Dark humor, Mykola. But funny. Thank you!

In Kyiv, what I personally feared the most (regarding the destruction of infrastructure by the Russians) is beginning - hitting telecom sites and data centers.

In Kyiv, what I personally feared the most (regarding the destruction of infrastructure by the Russians) is beginning - hitting telecom sites and data centers.

This really hurts. Telecom infrastructure is concentrated in certain points, as are logistics hubs. And so one hit can create a bunch of problems that can't be quickly overcome.

I know of cases where, after recent attacks in Kyiv, providers transferred customer data to Europe. In a very short period of time.

Yes, this is now a reality. The fact that our providers have long learned to build hybrid clouds and distribute customer data across different sites in Ukraine and abroad helps. Also, a large part of our cloud infrastructure (banking, for example) has been in global clouds since the beginning of the war: AWS, Azure, Google, etc. This is a reliable backup.

So I believe that everything will be fine with the country's main internet services and banking.

The “last mile” is at risk. Yes, when Internet providers’ nodes are attacked, the Internet may temporarily disappear. And that’s why you need to have a backup: an alternative second provider, Starlink — if constant access to the network is critical for you.

There is an interesting nuance in this stage of escalation. I have not yet heard that ours hit the data centers of Moscow in response. If this happens, then the Russians are at greater risk. They have all the cloud infrastructure, so to speak, "on the ground" - in the data centers of the Russian Federation, and not in global clouds. And 75% of data centers are concentrated in Moscow and the region. These are large facilities that are easy to notice.

So, by starting to bomb Kyiv's data centers, Russia is opening itself up to a new level of risk — infrastructural. And unlike the Ukrainian "cloud," they have nowhere to run.

Kazakhstan? I have serious doubts about their current capabilities. China? Will Russia move its state projects there quickly, while keeping all its secrets?

And this can resonate much more than the Wildberries and Ozon warehouses, which are spread across regions.

Telecom also has regional sites, but in terms of data storage, everything is much more compact. A few good, friendly "guys" - and goodbye, messenger Mach!
