Instead of Windows 12, Microsoft is preparing a major Windows 11 update for 2027 with performance improvements
Microsoft is preparing to release the next major update to its Windows 11 operating system, which will be released in 2027 under the name 27H2. Despite user expectations for the release of Windows 12, the company has decided to focus on improving reliability, optimizing memory, and fixing issues in the current version of the OS.
Microsoft is preparing to release the next major update to its Windows 11 operating system, which will be released in 2027 under the name 27H2. Despite user expectations for the release of Windows 12, the company has decided to focus on improving reliability, optimizing memory, and fixing issues in the current version of the OS.
According to insiders, the Windows 11 27H2 update will be a full-fledged replacement of the system core, rather than the usual monthly feature pack, as was the case with versions 25H2 and 26H2. This means that Microsoft will completely replace or deeply upgrade key components of the OS. Testing of the release within the Windows Insider program will begin much earlier than the usual June schedule.
In parallel with the technical changes, the company is preparing a visual update. The standard Bloom wallpaper, which has been used since the launch of Windows 11, will be replaced with new abstract graphic solutions with colored curves in the clouds. The developers have created separate variations of the wallpaper for consumer and enterprise versions of the OS - with a focus on productivity, gaming and working with content. The official announcement of the updated design is expected at the Microsoft Ignite conference later this month, and the full rollout is expected in early January.
At the same time, Microsoft engineers continue to fight the image of a "heavy" system. The latest Windows 11 updates have received significant optimizations for working with RAM, which is especially noticeable on a PC with 8 GB of RAM .
"Windows can now store up to 2GB of active data in RAM instead of moving it to the slower paging file on disk. This means that open apps or tabs are less likely to reload when you return to them," explained Windows Director Pawan Davuluri.
Independent tests by Windows Central confirmed a real reduction in memory consumption in the system and office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
It was previously reported that the popular messenger Discord is working on a full translation of its desktop application to the Rust programming language . This will allow it to abandon the Electron framework, which has been criticized for years for its memory usage.
