Five years of service and a two-year contract. The Ministry of Defense is preparing new demobilization rules
Ukraine may introduce mechanisms to establish clear terms of military service in the coming months. Currently, the possibility of discharge after five years of service or a two-year contract with guaranteed discharge upon completion is being considered.
Ukraine may introduce mechanisms to establish clear terms of military service in the coming months. Currently, the possibility of discharge after five years of service or a two-year contract with guaranteed discharge upon completion is being considered.
This was announced by Mykola Kniazhytskyi, a member of parliament from the European Solidarity faction, on Radio NV, sharing details of the meeting with government officials.
According to the MP, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov held a meeting with representatives of various parliamentary factions, where he presented a vision of the planned changes. Kniazhytskyi positively assessed the readiness of the head of the defense department for dialogue, although he noted that the practical mechanism for implementing these initiatives is still at the development stage.
According to the concept, if the war continues, the basic service term for military personnel will be approximately five years, counting from 2014. After this term, release mechanisms are provided.
«He said that there will be such a system — again, I don’t know if I have the right to recount the details, because it was an off-the-record meeting — but the bottom line is that Ukrainian military personnel will be required to serve for approximately 5 years if the war continues. And then there are mechanisms for dismissal, and this is counted from 2014. These are positive things that will establish terms of service, plus there will be contracting,» Knyazhytskyi said.
For those who need clearer legal guarantees, an alternative will be offered — a two-year military contract. After its expiration, the serviceman is guaranteed to be demobilized, but will remain in reserve for a certain period of time according to the Israeli model.
«After that, this period is discussed, people will be demobilized. And then they can mobilize again after a certain period — and this is also normal, because societies that are at war exist like this. The fact that the minister is working on this seems to me to be very right,» the deputy added.
Earlier, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov announced the preparation of large-scale changes in the system of recruiting, contract service and military support. According to him, he, together with President Volodymyr Zelensky, has been working on the transformation of service conditions since the first day after his appointment to the post.
