Trump said he asked Google CEO to rename the Atlantic Ocean in Google Maps in his honor, but was refused
US President Donald Trump suggested to Google CEO Sundar Pichai that he change the name of the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean to "Trump Ocean" or "Ocean of the Americas" in the Google Maps mapping service, but the head of the tech giant rejected the idea.
US President Donald Trump suggested to Google CEO Sundar Pichai that he change the name of the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean to "Trump Ocean" or "Ocean of the Americas" in the Google Maps mapping service, but the head of the tech giant rejected the idea.
Trump said this during a speech to supporters in South Carolina, Business Insider reports .
According to Donald Trump, he reached out to Pichai after Google Maps displayed new names for the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario — “Gulf of America” and “Lake of America,” in accordance with the president’s executive order for users in the U.S. However, the ocean proposal met with resistance from the company.
“Sundar, I’m thinking about the Atlantic Ocean. Can you handle that? No, no, no. I’m not going to do it this time. Oceans are a different matter, sir. They cover a lot of countries. Please don’t ask us to do that,” Trump quoted his conversation with the Google CEO as saying.
Following this response, Trump said he had decided to abandon the idea and keep the name “Atlantic Ocean.” Google representatives declined to comment.
