Nintendo Switch 2 update breaks third-party doc-stations

Some Nintendo Switch 2 owners have lost the ability to use cheaper docking stations after updating the system to version 21.0.0. Users report that the console has stopped working stably with «non-native» accessories, while the official dock for about $80 continues to work without any changes.
Engadget reported on the massive complaints about non-working docking stations, citing posts from Switch 2 owners on social media and YouTube.
After installing the firmware, some docks stopped displaying images altogether, while others forced users to constantly restart the console to make it «see» them. The problem does not affect all models, but complaints are being received about products from various brands.
Update 21.0.0 also adds a few handy features: the ability to disable autoplay videos in the eShop and new icons that show whether a digital version of the game is installed or a cartridge is being used. For those who only use official peripherals, this seems like a small but welcome improvement.
Owners of alternative docks are less fortunate. According to Engadget, some YouTubers have already tested several popular «dongles» and stated that after the update they have practically turned into «bricks». For some gamers, this means the loss of the only way to connect the Switch 2 to a TV without buying an expensive branded accessory.
The company’s behavior has once again sparked debate about how tightly Nintendo controls its own ecosystem. In recent months, fans have criticized it for its content pricing: Mario Kart World costs $80, a simple tutorial set of minigames starts at $10, and additional content for Donkey Kong Bananza costs $20. Against this backdrop, the possible «disconnection» of third-party docking stations is seen by many as another signal that players are being pushed towards more expensive official solutions.
At the same time, Engadget notes that there is no confirmation yet whether the restriction of third-party docks was a planned step or a bug in the firmware. The publication has contacted Nintendo for comment, and users are waiting for either an explanation or a new update that will restore the functionality of their devices.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how the Switch 2 launched in June and has already collected 10.36 million sales, which is the highest figure in the first months among all gaming platforms. Against the background of demand, Nintendo increased its forecast for the year to 19 million consoles and expects operating profit to grow by 15% (to $2.4 billion).
