Sources at The Verge report that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is seriously considering creating his own social network, which already has a prototype focused on image generation using ChatGPT. According to rumors, Altman is personally asking a small group of people to provide feedback on the project.
It is not yet known where the social network will launch within ChatGPT or as a separate application, but it will intensify Altman’s already bitter rivalry with Elon Musk. In February, after Musk made an offer to buy OpenAI for $97.4 billion, Altman replied: “Thanks, no, but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.”
The confrontation between the tech leaders has been going on for several years, with Altman and Musk previously publicly feuding over the Stargate project, a US initiative to create an advanced supercomputer. Musk had previously sued OpenAI, arguing that the company had deviated from its primary goal of "working for the benefit of humanity."
Experts agree that with its own social network, OpenAI will be able to collect unique real-time data, as X and Meta do, to help train its AI models. Grok Mask displays content from X in its results, while Meta trains the Llama model on its vast repository of user data.
And while OpenAI hasn't even commented on the rumors about the social network, Grok has received a new update that will help it compete even better with Meta and OpenAI's AI models.
