Artificial intelligence developer OpenAI, best known for ChatGPT, could make its biggest acquisition yet. Bloomberg reports that it is in talks to acquire startup Windsurf, formerly known as Codeium.
Windsurf is a tool that helps developers write code using artificial intelligence. Market participants know it as a project of the company Exafunction. In 2023, the startup attracted investments at a valuation of $1.25 billion, and is now discussing a deal at the level of $3 billion.
The $3 billion acquisition could significantly strengthen OpenAI's position in the AI coding segment, where GitHub Copilot (from Microsoft) and Claude (from Anthropic) are already active. Younger players like Cursor from Anysphere are also entering the market.
OpenAI recently received $40 billion in investment from SoftBank and was valued at $300 billion. The company planned to change its management model, but due to criticism from the community, it temporarily suspended this process.
We also recall how we wrote that OpenAI has slightly changed its structure, but emphasized that their mission remains unchanged.
