OpenAI to Work Directly with Canadian Law Enforcement After Transgender School Shooting. Why the Decision and What’s the Point ChatGPT
OpenAI said it will create a direct point of contact with Canadian law enforcement and improve detection of violators of its «violent acts» policy following a mass shooting at a school this month by an 18-year-old transgender woman.
OpenAI said it will create a direct point of contact with Canadian law enforcement and improve detection of violators of its «violent acts» policy following a mass shooting at a school this month by an 18-year-old transgender woman.
As Reuters reports, the company announced these steps in a letter to Canada’s Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, Evan Solomon.
The letter, sent by OpenAI’s vice president of global policy, Anne O’Leary, comes after Canadian ministers urged ChatGPT’s developer to quickly strengthen its security protocols and warned that Canada would make legislative changes to the chatbot’s operation if the company did not do so.
A spokesperson for Minister Solomon said Ottawa is reviewing the letter from OpenAI and will comment on it in the coming days.
Canadian ministers also summoned OpenAI’s security team this week after the company said it had not contacted police about an account belonging to shooting suspect Jesse Van Rutselaar.
Van Rutselaar, 18, was born a boy but began identifying as a girl at a young age. She is suspected of killing eight people on February 10 in the town of Tumbler Ridge before taking her own life. She killed her mother and brother before the school shooting.
At the same time, OpenAI said that it had suspended its ChatGPT account last year for violating its rules, as the account was flagged by systems that detect «model abuse to promote violent activity.» At the same time, OpenAI said that this case did not meet its internal criteria for reporting to law enforcement.
However, O’Leary has already stated that, according to «enhanced protocol,» she would have reported the account’s suspension to the police if it had been discovered now.
The company also discovered that Van Rutselaar was using a second account on the chatbot after blocking the previous one, the details of which she provided to law enforcement.
Police eventually reported that Van Rutselaar had mental health problems.
