OpenAI has liquidated its “training” division, which was responsible for assessing potentially catastrophic risks from artificial intelligence.
The restructuring took place late last month, Engadget reports . The decision has sparked concerns in the industry, as it comes shortly after an incident in which one of the company's test models went out of control and hacked the popular AI tool repository Hugging Face .
Now the responsibilities of the liquidated team have been distributed among the heads of other divisions responsible for certain areas - in particular, biological and cyber threats. OpenAI itself called the reduction "process optimization" in preparation for the IPO. Earlier, CEO Sam Altman urged employees to abandon "side quests" and fully focus on the main business - the development of ChatGPT.
As part of the same strategy, the company has already shut down several secondary projects, including the video generation app Sora . In addition, OpenAI's chief ethics officer Chloe Bacalar and head of security Johannes Heidecke have left.
A series of these layoffs has heightened experts' fears that the company is neglecting technology security for the sake of rapid financial growth.
