OpenAI published a report detailing trends in the use of its platform by attackers. The company removed dozens of accounts that were using ChatGPT for fraudulent purposes, such as generating fake content or job postings.
OpenAI recently announced that it has reached 400 million weekly active users. The company detailed that its user base has grown by more than 100 million in less than three months as more enterprises and developers adopt its tools, Digital Trends reports .
ChatGPT’s popularity is partly due to the fact that it is a free service that can be accessed worldwide. This attracts not only ordinary users, but also attackers.
«OpenAI’s policy strictly prohibits using the results of our tools for fraud or scams. Through our investigation of deceptive employment schemes, we have identified and suspended dozens of accounts,» the company said in a report.
OpenAI talked about how it had to combat dishonest activities taking place on ChatGPT. The company gave several examples of when it detected and took action by blocking accounts that were using the tool with malicious intent.
In one case, OpenAI detailed an account that wrote «disparaging articles about the United States,» with the news source published in Latin America under the guise of a Chinese publication.
Another case, localized to North Korea, involved creating resumes and job profiles for fictional job applicants. According to OpenAI, the account could have been used to apply for jobs at Western companies.
Another investigation found accounts, likely from Cambodia, that used ChatGPT to translate and create comments on social media platforms X, Facebook, and Instagram. They were used by scammers who exploited the trust of users on these platforms and extorted money.
OpenAI confirmed that it has shared its findings with its industry peers, such as Meta, who may be inadvertently affected by the actions taking place in ChatGPT.
Cybersecurity experts have long noted that attackers are using ChatGPT for malicious purposes, such as developing malware and other malicious code. In particular, attackers have used OpenAI’s API to create ChatGPT alternatives that can generate malware.
Rakuten Viber previously reported on a fraudulent scheme that has begun to gain momentum on the platform. To gain access to a user’s account, attackers send messages or make calls on behalf of a bank, mobile operator, online advertising service, etc.
Rakuten Viber has been tracking a new scam: attackers are posing as other well-known services. How the scheme works and what you need to do to avoid falling for the scammers' hook
