Today, OpenAI officially announced that Codex is getting plugin support.
All available plugins will be listed in the Codex catalog and available for use in the Codex application, Codex CLI, and IDE extensions, Neowin writes .
OpenAI emphasized that skills and plugins are designed for different use cases. Developers should use “skills” when they are working on one specific repository or workflow, when the behavioral logic is personal or project-specific, or during the experimentation phase before creating a ready-made package for multiple uses.
Developers should use plugins when they want to make the same skills or app integrations available to different teams or projects, or when they need to combine skills, MCP configuration, and integrations into a single installation module.
Skills cannot be published to others, while plugins can be versioned packages for internal use within an organization or for the general public in a marketplace.
Slack, Figma, NotionHQ, Cloudflare, and Gmail are just a few of the plugins already available in the Codex Plugin Directory. The ability for developers to add their own plugins to the official directory is coming soon.
OpenAI also emphasized that self-serve publishing and plugin management will be available in the near future.
