Opera launches its own AI browser. What Neon can offer users

Opera has launched its AI-focused browser, Neon. Key features include the ability to generate apps through AI queries and save prompt templates using a “card” feature. Opera joins a growing number of companies, such as Perplexity and The Browser Company, that are aiming to create so-called “agent browsers.”

The company first announced Neon in May, but until now the browser has only been available in a closed preview. You can see examples of the browser in action in demo videos.

Opera will now start sending invitations to select users who will be able to use it for a monthly fee of $19.99, TechCrunch writes .

“We built Opera Neon for ourselves — and for everyone who actively uses AI every day. Today we welcome the first users who will help us shape the future of agent browsers,” said Christian Colondra, Executive Vice President of Browsers at Opera, in his keynote speech.

The browser has several key components. First, it's a basic chatbot that you can interact with to get answers to your questions.

A more “agentic” feature in the browser is called Neon Do, which helps you get things done. For example, it can summarize an article from Substack and post a short version to a Slack channel. Since the browser has access to your browsing history, you can also ask it to provide details about a YouTube video you watched last week or a blog post you read yesterday.

The new Opera browser can also write code snippets, which is useful for creating visual reports with tables and charts. It is currently unclear whether these widgets can be shared with others.

The Skills feature in The Browser Company’s Dia browser allows you to reuse a prompt as a command or application. Neon lets you create similar prompt templates using “cards.” This is comparable to IFTTT (IF This Then That) for AI queries. You can combine cards like “pull-details” and “compare-table” to create a new prompt that compares products open in different tabs. As with Dia, you can create your own cards or use existing ones from the community.

In its demo, Opera shows how Neon performs tasks like ordering products. However, demos often don’t reflect real-world scenarios, especially with AI products. This means Neon will have to prove its capabilities in the real world.

Unlike its competitors, Opera positions Neon as a product for power users, offering it on a monthly subscription basis.
