Oracle invests $40 billion in Nvidia chips to build one of the world's largest data centers

The facility will require up to 1.2 gigawatts of power once fully operational and will serve as the flagship site for Project Stargate, a $500 billion initiative led by OpenAI and SoftBank.
Oracle has committed to spending about $40 billion on the latest high-performance Nvidia chips for a powerful new data center in Abilene, Texas, TechSpot reports , citing the Financial Times.
The facility will consist of eight buildings on 875 acres. Crusoe Energy Systems and Blue Owl Capital have raised $15 billion in debt and equity to finance construction. JPMorgan played a key role, providing $9.6 billion in loans, including a recently announced $7.1 billion tranche.
When construction is complete, the Texas facility will be one of the largest data centers in the world, with an expected opening date of mid-2026. OpenAI has signed a 15-year lease for the entire campus, which insiders told the Financial Times will be powered by 400,000 Nvidia GB200 superchips.
The data center will serve as a critical platform for training and deploying OpenAI's artificial intelligence model, an important step in diversifying its computing resources and reducing its dependence on Microsoft, its current primary infrastructure provider.
The exclusive agreement between OpenAI and Microsoft was signed earlier this year as demand for OpenAI’s computing power outstripped Microsoft’s available capacity. While negotiations are ongoing over the duration of Microsoft’s licensing rights to OpenAI’s models, the event marks a significant shift toward a diversified cloud partnership for the AI leader.
While Stargate has yet to directly invest in any data centers outside of Texas, its global expansion plans are already taking shape, with additional deployments in Europe and Asia being considered. The scale and pace of these investments underscore the intensifying competition among technology companies and countries to build the foundation for the next generation of artificial intelligence.
The Stargate project is ambitious in scale and vision. With support from OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and Abu Dhabi-based MGX, the group plans to invest up to $500 billion over four years to create a national network of AI supercomputing centers. The first $100 billion will go to fund up to 20 facilities, starting with the Texas center.
Sources say SoftBank and OpenAI will each own 40% of the company, making them major shareholders. Oracle and MGX, a state-owned investment company from the United Arab Emirates, have each committed $7 billion. SoftBank will control finances, while OpenAI will manage operations.
The campus could consume up to 5 GW of energy — more than four times the capacity of the Texas center — and eventually house more than two million of Nvidia’s cutting-edge chips. The UAE project, announced during President Donald Trump’s recent visit to the Gulf, is part of OpenAI’s “OpenAI for Countries” initiative, which aims to help governments build sovereign AI infrastructure.
Recently, dev.ua reported that Stargate has faced difficulties in attracting investment amid trade risks, US tariff policy, and economic instability.
According to Trump, the Stargate project is expected to create 100,000 jobs in the United States.
