The Fellowship of the Miltech— Palantir and Anduril convince competitors to join forces to compete with giants Lockheed Martin and Boeing

Palantir and Anduril, two major U.S. defense technology companies, are in talks with a dozen competitors, including SpaceX and OpenAI, to form a consortium to jointly bid for U.S. government contracts, seeking to challenge traditional «prime» contractors Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Boeing.

The consortium plans to announce in January that it has reached agreements with a number of technology groups. According to sources, companies in talks to join the consortium include Elon Musk’s SpaceX, ChatGPT developer OpenAI, autonomous ship maker Saronic and artificial intelligence data development group Scale AI. This is reported by the FT.

«We are working together to provide a new generation of defense contractors,» said one of the group’s founding members. These technology companies are seeking to grab a bigger slice of the U.S. government’s massive $850 billion defense budget from traditional prime contractors like Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Boeing.

According to a second consortium member, it will bring together the most powerful Silicon Valley companies and use their products to more effectively provide the US government with the most advanced defense and weapons capabilities.

Defense technology startups have raised record amounts of funding this year as investors bet they will be among the beneficiaries of increased federal spending on national security, immigration, and space exploration under Donald Trump’s new administration.

Russia’s wars against Ukraine and unrest in the Middle East, as well as geopolitical tensions between the United States and China, have increased the government’s dependence on technology companies developing advanced AI products that can be used for military purposes and have encouraged investors in the sector.

Palantir’s stock price has soared 300% in the past year, giving it a market cap of $169 billion — more than Lockheed Martin. The data intelligence group was co-founded by tech investor Peter Thiel, who also provided early backing to Anduril, which launched in 2017 and is valued at $14 billion this year.

Meanwhile, SpaceX was valued at $350 billion this month, making it the world’s largest private startup, and OpenAI has soared to $157 billion since its founding in 2015.

While SpaceX and Palantir have won major government contracts for two decades, some companies are new to government procurement. This year, OpenAI updated its terms of service to no longer prohibit the use of its AI tools for military purposes.

Defense procurement in the United States has long been criticized as slow and anticompetitive, favoring some decades-old leaders such as Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Boeing. These huge conglomerates typically produce ships, tanks, and aircraft that are expensive and take years to design and produce.

One of the consortium members described it as «aligning the industry» to «fulfill the Department of Defense’s technical priorities» and «solve critical software challenges.»

This month, AI platform Palantir and Anduril, whose names are inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, announced a collaboration. Palantir’s AI platform, which provides cloud-based data processing, has been integrated with Anduril’s Lattice autonomous software to «deliver AI for national security.»

OpenAI and Anduril previously announced a collaboration. As part of the partnership, OpenAI will integrate its software into Anduril’s anti-drone systems, which detect and shoot down drones.

And in November 2024, it was announced that startup Anthropic would team up with Palantir and AWS to provide U.S. intelligence and defense agencies with access to the Claude family of AI models. Anthropic said that access to Palantir’s Claude on AWS would provide U.S. defense and intelligence agencies with «powerful AI tools» that can quickly process and analyze vast amounts of complex data.
