How PawChamp works
PawChamp is a companion mobile app (available on iOS and Android) that helps dog owners train, understand, and care for their pets.
At the heart of the solution is the AI assistant Pawchie, built on the Claude language model and trained on the verified PawChamp knowledge base. The assistant analyzes the context (breed, age, behavioral characteristics of the dog) and provides scientifically based advice, based exclusively on positive reinforcement.
For complex cases that require deeper expertise, the application implements a hybrid model: the user can connect with a live expert in less than a minute.
The app also features a library of short video tutorials, guides, and training games structured into personalized programs. The team calls this approach “Duolingo for dog owners.”
Why is this needed?
The PawChamp team notes that in recent years, the demand for comprehensive pet care solutions has been growing worldwide, particularly among “pet-parents” — owners who treat their dogs as family members. Such users need quick access to proven advice and practical tools to help solve everyday behavioral problems.
Dmitry Ivanov, CEO PawChamp by SKELAR
We want every dog owner to have a personal expert in their pocket — a combination of knowledge, experience, and advice in the pet-tech market, which is projected to grow from $7.6 billion to over $17 billion by 2030. We achieve this by combining scientifically based knowledge with the power of AI. Product Hunt is a step towards global scaling for us. We want to demonstrate that Ukrainian teams are capable of creating world-class AI products in such fast-growing niches
Technological component
According to the team, a key challenge in the development was to train the AI model to provide ethical, accurate, and consistent advice, as there are many conflicting approaches to training. To do this, PawChamp created a detailed master prompt for the Pawchie AI persona and its own closed dataset with content prepared and verified by dog trainers.
The model is also trained to recognize the limits of its own competence: if the user's question goes beyond the scope of training (for example, it concerns veterinary problems), the AI does not try to come up with an answer, but recommends contacting a veterinarian, for more complex cases, the AI may recommend entering a chat with experts.
