Ukrainian Sub Sea Baby underwater drones hit a Russian submarine for the first time in history

The Security Service of Ukraine conducted a special operation in the port of Novorossiysk and struck a Russian Varshavyanka-class submarine using underwater drones.
«For the first time in history, underwater drones „Sub Sea Baby“ blew up a Russian submarine of class 636.3 „Varshavyanka“ (according to NATO classification — Kilo). As a result of the explosion, the submarine suffered critical damage and was, in fact, put out of action,» the SBU reported .
This was a joint operation of the 13th Main Directorate of Military Counterintelligence of the SBU and the Ukrainian Navy. On board the submarine were four launchers of the Kalibr cruise missiles, which the Russians use to strike at the territory of Ukraine.
The Russian army has about 10 Project 636 Varshavyanka submarines (Improved Kilo according to NATO classification) in service. The cost of one is estimated at about $400 million, but the SBU notes that, taking into account sanctions, the construction of a new submarine of this type could currently cost $500 million.
«The blown-up boat was forced to stay in the port of Novorossiysk due to successful special operations by the „Sea Baby“ surface naval drones, which displaced Russian ships and submarines from the Sevastopol Bay in temporarily occupied Crimea,» the SBU recalled.
Last year, the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed another submarine of the project 636.3 «Varshavyanka» — B-237 «Rostov-on-Don». It was hit on September 13, 2023 by Storm Shadow cruise missiles. On the night of August 2, 2024, the Defense Forces again hit the boat, which was under repair in the waters of the Sevastopol harbor, as a result of which it sank.
