Half a million users and speeds up to 1.7 Gbps. Kyivstar shared the first results of 5G testing
Almost 500,000 subscribers of the mobile operator Kyivstar have already used the fifth generation (5G) connection in test mode. Pilot zones are currently deployed in three cities, and the average Internet speed under load is 600–800 Mbps.
Almost 500,000 subscribers of the mobile operator Kyivstar have already used the fifth generation (5G) connection in test mode. Pilot zones are currently deployed in three cities, and the average Internet speed under load is 600–800 Mbps.
This is stated in the company's press release based on the results of the analysis of the test sites. Currently, 5G pilot zones are operating in real urban conditions in Lviv, Kharkiv and Borodyanka. Thanks to this, engineers are assessing the load on the equipment and user behavior. In the near future, the operator is preparing to launch similar sites in Kyiv and Odessa.
Since the project's launch in January 2026, the daily 5G audience in the operator's network has been about 50,000 users. In the test zones of Lviv and Kharkiv, the share of fifth-generation communication already generates 40% of all mobile Internet traffic. In total, the network has processed more than 358 TB of data. According to the company's statistics, the most active users of the new technology are owners of Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy smartphones.
As for speed, during closed tests without load, the data transfer rate exceeded 2.4 Gbps. After opening access to subscribers, the average speed is 600–800 Mbps, and maximum peak values are recorded at a level of more than 1.7 Gbps.
Background. Despite the start of testing of the new standard, the main mobile communication technology in Ukraine will remain 4G (LTE), which is currently available to over 96% of the population. A full-fledged commercial launch of 5G, which operators consider primarily as a platform for innovative business and state solutions, is planned after the end of the war. Earlier, Kyivstar President Oleksandr Komarov spoke in more detail about the prospects for the deployment of this technology.
