This was reported by Reuters, citing a statement by the South Korean leader during a government meeting. According to the Financial Services Commission (FSC), financial institutions such as Shinhan, Kookmin Bank, Hana Bank and Woori Bank were attacked by hackers.
South Korean police have already launched a full-scale investigation into the leak of confidential information. At this time, regulators and law enforcement are not disclosing details about the specific artificial intelligence tools used in the hack, as well as the final extent of the damage.
"In some cases of hacking attacks, signs of the use of artificial intelligence have appeared, which has caused considerable concern and alarm among the public. I ask that the circumstances be quickly and clearly clarified and that personnel and resources be focused on minimizing losses," President Lee Jae-myung emphasized.
The Financial Supervision Service (FSS) and the Institute of Financial Security have provided commercial banks with data on 28 unique IP addresses and information on countries linked to recent attack attempts. Financial sector leaders have called for maximum vigilance in responding to threats.
Australia previously reported a government health data portal hack using an OpenAI agent, marking the first confirmed case of AI intrusion into government systems. In addition, the Canadian government’s digital infrastructure was recently targeted by a similar attack by AI agents.
