Polish Unimot invests in Ukrainian-Polish project for production of drones and anti-drone systems
Unimot Group has announced its intention to enter the defense technology market. The company will become a co-owner of a new company, PZL Defence, which will specialize in drones and anti-drone equipment.
Unimot Group has announced its intention to enter the defense technology market. The company will become a co-owner of a new company, PZL Defence, which will specialize in drones and anti-drone equipment.
According to the Unimot press service, on July 24, the company signed a memorandum of strategic cooperation with PZL Sędziszów, an experienced Polish manufacturer of military components and a Ukrainian partner, whose name is not disclosed, but it is noted that he has real combat experience. The new enterprise was registered on July 21 and is currently undergoing legal formalities.
After the company is registered, Unimot will receive 40% of PZL Defence shares for PLN 400,000. The founding structure also provides for 50% for the Ukrainian partner and 10% for PZL Sędziszów. First, it is planned to launch civil drone production, and after obtaining licenses, the production of military UAVs and anti-drone systems for the protection of critical infrastructure.
PZL Sędziszów will provide production facilities, laboratories and its 85 years of expertise. The company already produces filters for Rosomak armored vehicles and Leonardo helicopters. The PZL Defence team will include specialists from Poland and Ukraine, including former military and defense engineers.
The project is aimed at developing reconnaissance drones, loitering munitions and systems to counter enemy UAVs. As Unimot Chairman of the Board Adam Sikorsky emphasized, the combat experience of Ukrainian partners is of paramount importance: «These are not tests at the training ground — these are proven solutions from the real front.»
The context of the war, in particular the massive use of Iranian Shaheds by Russia, requires solutions that provide effective protection. Since 2022 alone, the Russians have launched over 28,000 such drones over Ukraine, and, according to GUR estimates, this figure could reach 500 per night.
PZL Defence also responds to the trend of increasing military spending: in 2025, Poland’s defense budget will amount to a record PLN 186.6 billion (4.7% of GDP), and over the next decade, spending may exceed PLN 1.9 trillion. Within the EU, the project fits into the Readiness 2030 and SAFE programs, which provide up to EUR 800 billion for the development of the defense industry.
We previously reported on how Ukrainian military tech company Teletactic is raising $1.5 million in investment to scale its EW-resistant communications technologies. The new funding is aimed at scaling the next generation of tactical communications systems on the frontline and entering European markets.
