This is stated in a study by the Royal United Institute for Defense and Security Studies, which was analyzed by «Military».
According to analysts and Ukrainian officers, when 100-150 strike drones are launched against well-protected targets, an average of about 10 drones reach the target. That is why, in order to break through air defense, Ukraine is forced to concentrate a large number of drones in one direction.
The cost of a single strike drone, according to the study, is between $20,000 and $80,000, making such attacks financially burdensome, but still cheaper than the enemy’s spending on anti-aircraft missiles.
To destroy the most protected targets, drone attacks are often used as a stage of air defense exhaustion. Only after that are cruise missiles or heavy strike drones used.
Analysts also note the adaptation of Russian air defense to high-precision weapons. The percentage of successful hits of GMLRS missiles has decreased from almost 70 percent in 2022 to about 8 percent in 2025. According to existing combat experience, up to 10 ATACMS missiles may be required to destroy one radar.
At the same time, Russia is showing signs of a shortage of anti-aircraft ammunition. In particular, the Osa systems use outdated missiles, and the Buk SAM launchers often carry only one or two missiles instead of a full set.
