At a closed meeting with the clergy of the Diocese of Rome late last week, Pope Leo XIV demanded that his priests abandon the use of artificial intelligence to generate sermons.
«Like all muscles in the body, if we don’t use them, if we don’t move them, they die. The brain needs to be used, so our intelligence also needs to be trained a little so as not to lose this ability», the Pope said.
According to Futurism, Leo XIV said that despite the possibilities of artificial intelligence now or in the future, a chatbot will never be able to replace a flesh-and-blood priest. In his opinion, «to preach is to share the faith,» and AI will never be able to share the faith.
The Pope also warned his priests against mixing social media with real life. He said that if a person lives «a life truly rooted in the Lord,» they offer the world something special. Leo XIV added that a common «illusion on the Internet and TikTok» is the perception of followers and likes as a true spiritual connection.
Previously, Pope Leo XIV compared the development of AI to the Industrial Revolution, which radically changed people’s lives and accelerated the mass urbanization of the population.
Meanwhile, the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Basilica, in collaboration with translation services company Translated, has begun using its artificial intelligence tool Lara to create real-time translations of worship services in 60 languages.
