Donald Trump said he will sign an executive order this week on the AI approval process to avoid different regulations in each US state.
“There should be only one set of rules if we are going to continue to lead in AI… I will be signing an executive order on a single rule this week. You can’t expect a company to get 50 approvals every time they want to do something,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social, Reuters reports .
Trump did not provide details about the order, but Reuters reported last month that the US president was considering an option that aims to preempt state AI laws through lawsuits and withholding federal funding.
OpenAI, Alphabet, Meta and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz have called for national AI standards instead of patchwork laws from the 50 states, saying they stifle innovation.
The move is likely to face resistance from states, which have previously warned of "catastrophic consequences" if the technology is not regulated.
