Ukrainian developer created an interactive map of power outages for 10 cities
Ukrainian developer Vlaslo Butsky created a service called "Promin" that lets you see power outage schedules on a city map. It also alerts you when your home's power goes out and saves a schedule in case of internet problems.
Ukrainian developer Vlaslo Butsky created a service called "Promin" that lets you see power outage schedules on a city map. It also alerts you when your home's power goes out and saves a schedule in case of internet problems.
The developer spoke about his project on DOU. You can check out the website here.
Now, instead of looking for your address on the Oblenergo website, finding out the queue, and comparing it with the schedule, you can simply open "Promin" in your browser.
The map shows where the power is currently scheduled to be on and where it is not. You can find a specific house, check the next outage time, the schedule for today and tomorrow, and see information about nearby accidents.
Currently, Promin covers 10 cities. In seven of them — Lviv, Ternopil, Uzhhorod, Kropyvnytskyi, Poltava, Mykolaiv, and Ivano-Frankivsk — the developer has already collected data on queues for over 100,000 houses.
But with Kyiv, Dnipro and Odessa it turned out to be more complicated. Information about which queue each address belongs to is not publicly available. Therefore, Butsky decided to involve the residents themselves: they can add a queue for their house, and their neighbors can confirm it. If two users indicated the same queue, the service marks it as confirmed.
However, "Promin" shows the situation according to the schedules of regional energy companies, so during emergency or unscheduled outages, the data may not match reality.
There are also restrictions for security reasons. The developer hides information on the general map about houses that are not disconnected due to connection to the same lines as critical infrastructure. Otherwise, such addresses could be used to determine the location of important objects.
According to the developer, "Promin" can also warn about a power outage via a Telegram bot or browser. The bot can supposedly set up a notification 15, 30, or 60 minutes before a power outage. However, it is not yet clear how to enable this feature: there are no instructions or links to the Telegram bot on the website. The author did not specify its name.
And in Lviv, you can also find the nearest shelters on the map, check reports of problems with water and heating, and even see where trams and trolleybuses are currently running.
In the future, the author wants to add new cities, and calls on residents of Kyiv, Dnipro, and Odessa to help fill out the map.
