The state innovation platform Brave1 reported that Ukrainian deftech companies have begun developing strike missiles equipped with artificial intelligence algorithms for navigation and guidance.
This was reported to Business Insider by Brave1 CEO Andriy Hrytsenyuk. He said that several Ukrainian companies are already working on integrating AI solutions directly into missile systems.
Artificial intelligence has previously been widely used in drones and ground robots for target recognition and navigation, but applying the technology to missiles poses new technical requirements.
«Initially, artificial intelligence was widely used in drones. It is not that fast — this is enough for UAVs, but missiles require much higher speeds,» explained Hrytsenyuk.
He added that although missile AI systems have not yet reached mass adoption, as in the drone sector, Ukraine already has the first successful developments and many projects in the implementation stage. In total, more than 200 Ukrainian companies produce AI components for missiles, drones, radars and other military systems.
Brave1 clarified that the integration of artificial intelligence will expand the accuracy and autonomy of weapons, but will not completely eliminate humans from the process — operators will remain involved in decision-making.
It was previously reported that specialists from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (GUR MO) discovered an Nvidia Jetson Orin computer module in the new Russian S-71 Monochrome cruise missile. This may indicate attempts by the Russian Federation to use elements of artificial intelligence for guidance and control of the missile.
