Reddit closes RSS and public API due to AI bots and parsing

Reddit will end support for RSS feeds and its public API. The company explains the changes as a result of the rise of large-scale parsing and automated abuse, including from AI bots.

Reddit announced this in announcements for moderators and developers.

The company calls RSS a platform for large-scale parsing. Its support will be completely discontinued November 13, 2026. Reddit recommends that moderators who use RSS for notifications switch to Discord Relay and migrate their workflows by this date.

Reddit’s public API will also be decommissioned, but later, in March 2027. This will particularly affect AI bots that use Reddit data to generate responses to user queries. In the future, access to the API for such scenarios will only be possible under a license agreement with Reddit.

The company will also restrict access to Old Reddit to registered moderators and newly registered users. Reddit attributes this decision to a parsing issue.

The changes come as Reddit’s content becomes increasingly valuable to AI companies. As TechCrunch notes, Reddit is entering into licensing agreements to use user content to train models. In the second quarter of 2026, the social network’s non-advertising revenue grew 24% year-over-year to $43 million.

Thus, Reddit is gradually moving from free access to its data via RSS and API to controlled access, particularly through commercial licenses.
