Ukrainian IT expert created a living archive of commentary gems for the 2026 World Cup
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has already given fans hundreds of emotional commentary metaphors, loud expressive expressions and funny «pearls» that instantly become memes. Especially so that no masterpiece gets lost on the air, a Ukrainian developer has created a unique fan project — a living interactive archive that uses artificial intelligence to collect, structure and transform the best commentary quotes from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
«I’ve been searching for my ikigai lately, a Japanese concept of life’s purpose, which lies at the intersection of what you’re good at and what you love. For me, that intersection was programming and my passion for football,» wrote Reddit user avhiab.
This is how the project of a living archive of the best commentary quotes, metaphors, and pearls of the World Cup was born, which the developer worked on in his free time.
How the 2026 World Cup «pearls» rating works
WC2026 features a flexible rating system. It is a full-fledged quote feed where users can easily find the most recent or popular sayings by sorting them by the «Hot» and «Latest» tabs. In addition, the built-in filtering by commentator allows you to find all the masterpieces from a specific author in one click.
It also has a duel mode inspired by the legendary Facemash mechanics — the same concept of comparing «who is cooler» with which Mark Zuckerberg once started creating Facebook. The user is offered to choose the best of two random quotes. This approach is not only entertaining, but also helps to quickly raise promising, but so far underrated «pearls» to the top.
Additionally, there are 17 unique local rewards to unlock for your activity. Users can compete for daily visit streaks, earn badges for nightly voting, or hunt for specific regional achievements, such as those awarded for matches or activity in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
The process of collecting «pearls» is completely devoid of manual routine: the application independently takes the audio recording of the broadcast and transcribes it (translates voice into text) using the WhisperX neural network. After that, the resulting text array is sent to the Gemini artificial intelligence, which analyzes the context, selects the top 10 most vivid, funniest or most important quotes and instantly adds them to the database, ready for evaluation by users.
The developer admits that design is clearly not his strong point. So, in matters of visuals, he completely relied on his AI assistant. Moreover, during the development of the site’s appearance, the main prompt sounded something like this: «Please make the interface not similar to most typical AI-generated applications.»
Technical stack
The developer also shared the technical side of his fan project. The frontend is powered by Svelte 5, while the backend is built on the Node.js platform using the Express 5 framework. The IT guy chose SQLite 3 as the database, and the infrastructure is provided by a combination of Docker and Caddy.
