Rheinmetall opens Europe's largest artillery shell production plant

German defense concern Rheinmetall has opened Europe's largest artillery shell manufacturing plant. The company's CEO Armin Pappeger said the company is ready to open similar plants in other European countries.
The Romanian plant began trial operation in the second quarter of this year and will have a capacity of up to 350,000 rounds per year when it is fully operational from 2027.
The enterprise consists of two buildings: for the production of 155-mm artillery shells and for loading, assembling and packaging products.
The investment is around 500 million euros and will create more than 500 jobs. In total, the German company has invested 9 billion euros in defense initiatives across Europe over the past two years. Rheinmetall also plans to produce rocket artillery at the Romanian plant and the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle from next year.
Armin Pappeger previously reported that due to bureaucratic red tape, the construction of Rheinmetall's Ukrainian ammunition plant has still not been agreed with the Ukrainian authorities. He added that Ukraine wants to double the plant's capacity, but this requires more funding for the project.
In Ukraine, Rheinmetall already has an active equipment repair plant , is building a plant for the production of artillery shells, and plans to build a plant for the production of anti-aircraft systems.
