As Reuters reports, citing an interview with Sberbank’s First Deputy Chairman of the Board, Alexander Vedyakhin, the Russian side is hoping for demand from developing countries that seek to implement AI but have limited budgets or weak infrastructure.
Russian developers openly admit that their models, in particular GigaChat from Sberbank and YandexGPT from Yandex, are unable to compete on equal terms with leading Western or Chinese technologies.
«At first it will be slower and not as smart as Anthropic, Grok or DeepSeek, but it will meet your values,» Vedyakhin said on the eve of an economic forum in St. Petersburg.
According to the bank representative, the global AI market has supposedly reached saturation in terms of the number of parameters in neural networks, so the future lies in more compact and specialized models. In the Russian Federation, they believe that businesses do not need giant models to solve specific tasks, for example, for credit rating, because they waste computing resources on «quoting poetry.» The next step in the development of technology, the Russians call model compression.
Despite these statements, Russia faces a critical hardware shortage due to Western sanctions that block access to modern graphics processors. During Vladimir Putin’s visit to China, Sberbank’s management tried to negotiate the purchase of Chinese chips to power GigaChat.
However, any alternative solution will find it difficult to compete with Nvidia’s US-based CUDA software standard, which remains dominant in the field of large language model (LLM) programming.
