This is reported by Ukrainska Pravda, citing its own sources in law enforcement agencies.
According to the investigation, Russian handlers recruited the suspect remotely, posing as representatives of the SBU. To convince the man that the soldier was allegedly a «traitor», they sent him a fake photo created with the help of artificial intelligence. The photo showed Obolensky in a T-shirt with Russian symbols against the background of the Kremlin.
Under the influence of AI manipulation, the attacker approached the commander from behind on Kharkiv Street and attempted to shoot, but his Makarov pistol misfired. At the scene and during further investigative actions, law enforcement officers seized weapons and ammunition.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to the assassination attempt.
«I spoke with the commander of the Charter, Ihor Obolensky. There was an attempt on Igor’s life today. The attacker and his accomplice were detained. The necessary procedural actions are being taken. There was a report by Oleksandr Poklad on this. We will definitely respond to this attempted attack on Ukraine and the Ukrainian commander,» Zelenskyy said.
A pre-trial investigation is currently underway in the case. Law enforcement officers are investigating the channel through which the weapons were transferred to the perpetrator, as well as investigating possible leaks of information about the commander’s schedule and travel routes.
